21 Guns and Fireflies… rocks my boat!

(…still on a plane… see last post, you’ll know what I’m talking about)

You don’t normally hear my talking a lot about music.  And even if you did, it’s usually what you may consider sappy jazz numbers or cliched tunes from famous house/electro numbers…  Not that I have any problems with being sappy or cliched.

Well, recently, my musical boat (…I don’t know why the hell, I called it that…) was rocked by Greenday’s cool "21 Guns"… and Owl City’s "Fireflies".  What do you call these genres?  Alternative rock numbers?

Whatever they are called, kudos to the great composers and singers of these great new-age songs… Unconventional and sometimes almost sounding like music you would listen to if you were high on marijuana, but the musical pleasure remains even if you were not really on the substance.. (I hope not!) 🙂

Well, I never really went into figuring out the meanings of the songs, but when I do I’ll add on to this post.

In the meantime, let’s continue to enjoy the flavourful, delightful sounds from these and (hopefully) many more to come!

😉 ENJOY!!!

Valentine’s Day : The Movie

(…third post and still on a plane… see last 2 posts for explanation)

Valentine’s Day.

First allow me to say that I did not watch "Valentine’s Day" on Valentine’s Day… Hehehe… If my wife had been around, I would be busy with my own love induced dramatisation of Valentine’s Day… too busy to be reliving the lives of all these couples on screen on this day…

Anyway, I have to be honest… I know it was an all-star cast… but as I do not have internet connection right now, I should refer to the actors that I do know or are memorable in the show… (I suck at names… even famous ones!)  There was Jennifer Garner, Ashton Kuscher, Jessica Biel, Jamie Foxx, Mario Lopez… (what?  not Mario?  He looks like a Mario to me! :-P…) Jessica Alba, Queen Latifah, McDreamy and McCheesy-hairy-chested-walking-manly-cliche (that’s my nick for him), Julia Roberts…  (wow, not bad, I remembered quite a few of the main cast…and …yes, I missed out quite a few more too… the actor on the plane of whom I forgot his name…. geeky 70’s show actor, Princess Diary actress (now drop your jaws simultaneously and look at my with disgust)… I suck at this… anyway…

The saddest part of my experience with the movie is that, I had to watch it all alone… :-(  Somewhere out there (in Sarawak) my wife isn’t here with me… duh! Anyway, I watched it yesterday…

With a popcorn, drink and a nice little tray of nuggets (my dinner and it’s also a kind of a ritual if I am anticipating a great movie… something about the mix of savoury and sweet flavours that gets to me.  Anyway, had good expectations about the movie when I entered… but…

…not impressed.. 🙁

The first two thirds of the of the movie was like jumping from one fast moving train to another without even slowing down… as the story jump from one couple to another.  Before you can barely grasp a hold on what’s going on… it moves on to the next… I wouldn’t have minded that but the funny-lines were hits-and-misses.  And the little romantic boy in the show, was like a thrown in… actually, with his acting, he didn’t even look like he was a real boy (Pinocchio could have taken his place in the show… was he casted?…)

Well, anyway, although it all got tied back together at the end.. about who’s suppose to be with who… too bad the entertaining part of the show had to come so late…

Spoiler next!! (don’t read on if you haven’t seen the movie… or if you intend to see the movie at all)

The clincher and most emotional part of the show, that made me say "awwww. that was sweet"… was when we all realise Julia Roberts was coming home to her son… :’-)

Anyway, sappy romantic flick it was… thrown in almost seemingly like an obligatory pro bono work by some of the best actors and actresses… for that, I have to forgive its shortcomings and just take the whole thing with a pinch of salt… (which I have been doing a lot lately… 😉

Well… till the next movie that comes along an scintillates me to post another endless rattle…. ciao!

50,000 thousand feet, or I guess?!

Here I am… first time blogging on a plane.. about 50 thousand feet in the air?  Err, was that what the pilot said??  Ok no worries, well at least it’s still high enough that you can freefall without a parachute for at least a few minute.. oh God, why did I just give myself that thought?

So, is there a "mile-high" club for writers and bloggers on a plane.  Picture this… me sitting almost in as much recline as I can get from an economy sized seat behind another person snoring away also in full recline… my notebook screen is semi-opened just barely allowing me to see the text on this screen.  Either I lose my belly for future in-flight writing experiences for that maximum computer screen viewing space or I fly business class. I former should be considerably cheaper! 😛

Anyway.. I know I won’t be posting this up till much later when I get internet connection in Bali, that is IF I get internet connection in Bali.  After all, I should be taking a break from doing anything on computer, right?… Wrong… I love to write, so it’ll just be "fun" writing for now.

Eat your heart out, cause I’ll be writing from the white sandy beaches of Bali, underneath the blue skies and soft Balinese music while getting an authentic Balinese foot massage.  Yup, that’s the picture of pure perfection in my mind.

Ok… it’s a 5pm flight to Bali, and we are reaching at 8pm.  It’s almost 6:45pm and almost getting dark outside.  This is indeed cool.  I am rekindling the thoughts of Casablanca… dark, rainy night, on a plane that is jittering, lighting and rain just outside the windows, and my on this computer in a crummy little economy class space, typing away.  In my thoughts, it’s still a nice feeling to romanticize it.

Ok.. mom and dad is sleeping, I’ll type a couple more blogs and then I’ll get back to the "book of the trip"… the thought-provoking "Outliers" by Malcolm Gladwell!

The Demise of My Memory Maker

Well… yes… it was kind of like that… the "demise"… my beloved camera, close friend and constant memory maker…. *deep thought* (Mind goes back to the time my cam took a dive with my Sigma 17-70mm… splitting my Sigma in 2 and camera shutter… whining for life…it seriously was whining… motor spinning! I almost felt it calling out for help, but I put it to rest when I turned it off…

But, I shall not fret… as that little buddy of mine will be resurrected soon.  It is now sitting in the Canon hospital waiting for a new heart and aorta surgery!  All the way from Japan, I guess… A new synthetic, fluttering heart… or rather shutter and lens mount… definately a bionic combination… Doc said that it’s heart will be as good as new and I will be able to count up from zero shutter count!

Cool beans!

Now the million dollar question… (it’s only a million dollar because a million photographer ask the question all the time!)

Option 1 >>> Sell it off after fixing and buy new camera and a kit lens and smile like the young lady behind the counter at KFC who’s just gotten a RM10 tip….

Option 2 >>> buy 2 spanking new lens and smile like I’ve just reach land after swimming for days in shark infested waters?

Damn it…. you tell me lah.. 😉

It’s All Connected!

Sweet apple, honey coated pumpkin pie!!!

I forgot how fun this was…. I guess I had it all set up when I networked all my SNS stuffs altogether… A single blog that linked to a shoutout in my Twitter status that is connected to my Facebook, MySpace, Multiply and Plaxo status… Hehehe…

But seriously?!! That’s plain ‘ol LAZY!!! But, nvm… as long as I also spend enough time living a life so I can blog about it, then that’s good enough… nothing could be worse than blogging about blogging… 😛

Blog Like Big Mama!!!

Well, it’s about time I got into some serious writing!  The weeks passed, I have been swamped in a plethora of work commitments that just seems to swim in when you least expect it to come…. but I have kept a proper vigil on my TWEETS and KenCanQuotes! (KCQ) after all… if I can’t blog like Big Mama… at the very least I can tweet like Twitty!…

But, nvm… keep my blogs short… and then I’ll blog more often whenever 140 characters isn’t enough… 😉

The Perodua Alza : MPV or just car?

MPV = Family!

Well, not anymore, my sophisticated friends… MPV nowadays just means having more people for the partaaaayy! (or more room to puke after the partay… :-P)

Ok… that didn’t sound quite right.  But, perhaps ‘more room’ should keep ya listening.  I tell you, recently or perhaps for sometime now, Perodua seems to always have their best act together pulling out great hat-tricks to put Proton in their tail-dust.

Only less than a year after Proton reveals the first national MPV, which certainly had heads turning at the start, Perodua pulls the table cloth from underneath Proton’s comfy table and makes a red carpet/curtain entrance into the main stage with their latest Perodua Alza.

I guess the designers of the car is probably laughing right at this moment for having thought of something that is neither here nor there but should be everywhere in everyone’s thoughts.  Because in the ad campaigns and WOM (word-of-mouth) many are asking.. is this a true MPV or a car that looks like an MPV?  And the price it goes for, just teases you in both directions! 😉

When I first had my eyes first set on the real car, I immediately see the similarities with the new Honda Jazz especially from the front and side profile.  See the similarities with the third and last piece of window?

This just shows how sporty this new MPV is and it takes the most beautiful cues from Toyota Passo Sette, which it models itself from.

The Alza goes for a great price approx at RM66k for the metallic 1.5 Automatic version, just about RM16k above the best selling car in Malaysia, little brother Perodua Myvi. Nice!

It’s not bad as a first car, really… what would really tip in favour of young graduates getting the vehicle is really how easy it would be to convince mom and dad that the extra room would make for a lot more family time! 😉

Well, personally I foresee many Proton Exora and Toyota Avanza cancellation orders, for those who are a mix between sportiness and space.  The Alza should be filling the roads in a year or two’s time.

(Damn, I’m seriously considering this as a second car, should my plan fail to convince the minister of finance about the Kia Forte!)

Kia : My Forte Is This!

It’s not often I talk about cars on my blog, in fact… come to think of it, never.  But, nevertheless, like other things that catches my eyes, I thought I’d start putting some of the ones that has really gotten my attention.

Here’s this piece of beautiful machinery:kia-forte-official-img_13

Yup!  It’s the Kia Forte baby! And it’s in town!

You know… I am really amazed at how beautiful cars are become more affordable… or is it the other way around, how affordable cars are becoming more beautiful.  This new Kia Forte which is pitted against big brothers like the Civic, Corolla Altis and Lancer stands apart with it’s under RM80k price tag for a base model, RM75,800 to be precise!  Can you beat that?  You’d have every baby of the house, having graduated and getting their first cars, running to mommy and daddy asking for an upgrade of RM25k to buy the Forte instead of a Perodua Myvi 1.3EZi!

Even the full spec 2.0 model has a cool, sub RM100k price tag.. (only RM93,800) the perfect tool for extracting drool from white collared, young executives.kia-forte-official-img_15

Hmm.. you know, it’s hard when candy starts being thrown at you!  A good lick and that’s it.  This wasn’t the first candy I had encountered.  My next blog will be talking about what got me into this candy-feeding frenzy!

But, you gotta admit, it is beautiful isn’t it?  And for the price tag, resale value will be something you’d put aside for the moment while you practice your smug look in the rearview mirror as you speed down the busy streets of Kuala Lumpur.

kia-forte-official-img_14 KIA, continue to outdo yourselves!

Nobody Learns to Swim without Water

I recently wrote a quote about facing challenges is like learning to swim.

Well, to learn how to swim you need water and nobody learns to swim without water.  So what if you are having a hard time… your daily regime playing it hard on you?  Well, you need it, my friends.

Those little challenges put together makes up for a whole bunch of opportunities for achievements!  See everything with an end in mind.  There is a purpose to what you are doing, even if it seems pointless at first.  Nobody can say that they are doing something for nothing.  There is simply no such thing.  Even the most ridiculous task are accomplished because you simply want to prove something.

Well, this KCQ quote came up because I was personally facing a hard time with piles of work and responsibilities.  And I guess I put myself out there because I know what I do has a purpose.  Sometimes the the unglamorous problems and unimaginable difficulties get the better of you the first time around… but then change your attitude towards these challenges and DARE it to hit you again..

I bet you, you’d do better the second time around. 😉

Happy swimming!

Think Like a Pro

What’s the fastest way to get your mind accustomed to new things?  Well, think about those things like how you would as a pro.  Imagine yourself being an expert in that field and in the way it works.  Visualise yourself at that very second having to give a lecture to a class of 1000 people who see you as the main man, the expert in the field.

Because when you do that, your mind will go into what I call “survival mode”, a scenario that you have no choice but to get through and survive.  Consciously and subconsciously, you will begin to receive relevant questions and some of these are answered immediately (simply because some answers are common-sense) and some will create an itch in you to find out the answers.

So the next time you get thrown into a scenario, don’t say you can’t or you don’t know anything about it, instead think like a pro!  After all, if you are thrown into a bull ring, you don’t just stand there and act stupid, you’d do all you can to SURVIVE! 🙂
